A Bank Holiday and a day off!  So I went down to Lydden Hill for the BHP Performance Show.  A heady mix of “run what you brung”, demonstration drives and huge traffic jams.

But my favourite is the drifting.

When a couple of high powered performance cars are sliding sideways at you then a couple of things run through your head as a photographer.  Angle of light obviously – ideally you want the cars to pop off the track.  Shutter speed of course – too slow and everything will be blurred but too fast and they will look like they are parked.  This is 1/80 second.  Panning technique – you need to track the cars all the way through the shot even during the tricky bit when the mirror comes up and stops you seeing anything.  Smooth hands and good technique.

But mainly what goes through my head is “hang on, they are awfully close and apparently out of control….”.
