One of the most common questions I get asked is “What if you’re ill?”
Many people will try to dodge this question because it’s a tough one – here’s the honest answer (and news of how this has worked out recently!)
1. I will shoot your wedding. Think about it this way. How many times last year were you really too ill to go to work? I mean, when you wouldn’t have been paid if you didn’t turn up? Exactly. Photographing your wedding is by far the most important thing to me. If I’m well enough to do it without jeopardising quality then I’ll be there. And since I’ve been working for myself (about 15 years) I’ve never taken a day off due to illness.
2. I will try my best to get somebody else to cover it. In fact this is the only honest answer you’ll ever get from anyone. Even if it’s a big studio with 20 photographers the chances of one of them being free on any given day is about the same as finding one of my network of photographers to cover it. I meet up regularly with many of the top wedding photographers in Kent and stay in touch with hundreds nation wide through professional organisations and web forums. I know their work and I know I can rely on them. Just like they can rely on me.
3. You get your money back. That’s what my contract says but personally I would think I had failed if we couldn’t use one of the first two options.
Which brings me to the Friday. I was all set for a relaxing day mounting some prints ready for a wedding fair on Sunday. Then I got a call from a friend who runs her own wedding photography business. She’s just had a pretty major operation and was concerned about a wedding her business partner was going to shoot. I heard some of the details – the bride and groom are both professional wedding photographers, some of the guests are professionals and most of them are serious amateur/enthusiast photographers. Oh and the press may be going. It will be a tough gig.
So mounting prints will have to wait. I’m off to Ely. Because others would do the same for me. Oh and because I love photographing weddings
