I live in Canterbury. But it’s rare that I get to work in Canterbury – for one thing we don’t have a huge number of wedding venues within the city walls. So it was a double pleasure to photograph Rob and Monika’s wedding at the St Lawrence Cricket Ground in Canterbury on Saturday. Not only was it a gorgeous wedding (and a beautiful day!) it was a short trip home at the end of it!
Most days for me start with a dress. But Monika arrived at the cricket ground just a little while before the wedding and was all ready to go on the dot of 3pm. So this day started with beer….
[By the way, this is going to be a fast and furious blog post – Monika and Rob are flying somewhere hot(ter) tomorrow and desperately want to see the pictures before they leave.]
In fact, what better way to while away the afternoon than chilling out on the Cowdrey Pavilion at the St Lawrence Ground with a few nibbles and a nice cold glass of Kent’s finest?
Meanwhile, of course, Monika was in a room downstairs getting ready. Calmly, confidently. And perfectly to time. Just like this.
And then, right on the dot of 3, she walked in the door. And Rob melted.
Most people did, actually. Pretty much the whole room was in tears as Rob and Monika got married.
It was lovely for them to be surrounded by family and friends, many of whom had travelled from the Netherlands to be there.
With the sun beating down from behind the Colin Cowdrey Stand, it seemed wrong not to do the group pictures there. Right on that beautiful grass. Best lawn in Canterbury.
Now, cricket aficionados know that the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury is special. Or rather the lime tree there is. Apparently it’s the only tree within the boundary rope of any first class cricket ground anywhere in the world. I fact, there are special rules for cricket covering this tree. Of course, I didn’t know any of that, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It made the pictures look nice though.
All too soon, it was time for me to leave and begin my short trip home. But first, I made sure that I went round the reception room and took pictures of all the guests. I know some photographers don’t really like doing table or group shots – but when else are all your friends going to get together and be well dressed and relatively sober? It’s worth the few minutes it takes to add these memories to the day.
As I mentioned, Rob and Monika are off on their honeymoon at the moment, but they will be able to see any messages you leave for them below.
