Don’t worry – I’m not suggesting you sell your own wedding pictures! If I photographed your wedding recently then you want to drop into the gallery where you can buy your wedding pictures. No, this article is for all the new photographers who contact me asking how to move from photography as a hobby to making money from it.

The answer is it’s pretty tough – but one way you can make ends meet in the early days is by selling your pictures through stock libraries. This article will give you a kick start by suggesting 3 books that will give you clues about what to shoot, how to shoot it and giving you one great resource for the budding stock photographer.

To kick off then, here are some of the best books on shooting for stock.

Lee Frost’s book is well written, easy to read and simply inspirational. Great for the UK based photographer you’ll learn how Lee has sold the same images again and again making more money from less work.

Michael Heron is a US based stock photographer. This means you have to be pretty careful with some of the legal points he makes. That doesn’t detract fromt he book though – this is full of tips on how to shoot pictures that will sell and then how to market them so they sell and sell again.

Another US centric book – if you really want to get ito stock photography in depth then Nancy Brown’s book is well worth a look. If you only have time for one book then choose Heron or Frost’s.And one great resource for you…

When I shot stock for a living, this was the “bible”. Literally hundreds of stock libraries, names and addresses of picture buyers – every resource you could want for selling your pictures.
